Emergency - Exit Lighting
Emergency & Exit Lighting are life safety equipment found in businesses, churches, factories, garages, malls, offices, public buildings, retail stores and schools, installed and maintained in accordance with building-fire codes under the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), generally a fire department.
Emergency Lighting, the lights that go on when the power goes off, is intended to light a safe path in commercial buildings to its exterior. Exit Lights mark an exit, or path to an exit, with letters generally red in color, while some communities changing to the newer green letters, however, is the choice and direction of the AHJ for the respective premises.
Two (2) styles of these lighting units are used, remote or stand alone, the most common is stand alone, with its own internal alternate power source of a battery w/charger. Remote units which are separated from the lights, may use a power input other than standard, and have a larger external alternate power capacity to support multiple lighting devices/fixtures.
Presently, when power loss occurs, units are required to function for thirty (30) minutes while new installations, or when major building renovations occur, replacement is required with ninety (90) minute device operation.
Emergency - Exit Lighting should be tested in-house periodically. Alarm Specialists does install, maintain, repair and test, during scheduled fire activation tests, reporting and returning their operation to industry parameters and standards at reduced cost(s) to their existing on-line system users.
